The syntax is new. I have no idea why they found it necessary to invent another syntax to accomplish what HTML 1.0 did.
It’s wysiwg editors are the worst and this is really the crux of the issue, IMO. The “code view” of the wiki syntax doesn’t include things that the wysiwg editor is putting in so bouncing back and forth doesn’t work. In wysiwg mode the editor doesn’t show the user what text will be effected by a change. i.e. I change the heading tag on a line and for some reason the line below is effected, why? Probably because the tag ends after that carriage return, but how am I supposed to know that? and how do I get around it?
